Did you know that if you do not do something you do not want to do or are fearful of within 3 seconds your brain will talk you out of it and your odds of actually following through are slim to none?
Use a simple example of an alarm clock. The sound of that alarm pierces through your slumber and you know you are supposed to get of bed and start your day. Your conscious mind emerges and reminds you that under your blankets it’s warm and once you remove those covers you will be cold and uncomfortable. You spiral into the quick version of what your day is going to consist of and dread hits you, so you hit the snooze.
We all want to push off the unwanted until we are “ready” to deal with it. We all want to wait and think more about trying something new because what if it is not going to be what you had hoped or expected? We all want unlimited time to make decisions because what if we make the wrong one?
“What if” can be a real pain in the ass when it comes to you evolving into a more complete human being. So, this weekend consider this concept: What if you tried something new, did something hard, or faced something you have been putting off without endless thinking or consideration? How would your life be different?
Metaphorically speaking, screw the snooze button and jump out of bed. I have witnessed 44 years of my life whip through in a blur. If I am lucky, I’m only halfway through my journey. However, if this second half goes as fast as the first half the time is of the essence.
According to studies a significant portion of our decisions, often estimated at around 95%, are unconscious. You are a train on a track if you don’t wake up. Learning never stops and it is a great way to keep that brain working and building new pathways, so find something new that moves you and jump.
Three seconds is all it takes to talk you out of your better self.
